Professional Development for the year 2017-18

In the fall of 2017 KLA presented its first pedagogical seminar of the school year directed by Ms. Claudia Chaustre, our Professional Development Director, Titled “Education with quality: The Reggio Approach”. All our lead teachers were able to attend. Here we witnessed presentations from other KLA schools and planned how we could work with our children to promote quality and enhance learning while implementing the Reggio philosophy.
A two-day conference in October 2017 was led by two distinguished personalities, Marina Mori, Educator from Reggio Emilia and Moira Nicolosi Pedagogista from Reggio Emilia presenting “Weaving theory and practice – The Reggio Emilia Approach”. A comprehensive view of the work done at the schools there.
On-going weekly professional development sessions bring together the lead teachers for discussions on current projects and mutual support guided by our own Pedagogical Coordinator Ms. Sandra Carpio Follegati, as well as staff meetings and teacher workdays.
In our Spring Conference of March 2018 KLA Schools again was graced with the visit of Ms. Marina Mori and Elizabetta Rasori presenting “The Culture of the Atelier” strengthening the use and correct applications of the Atelier.
Study groups divided by age groups meet every three months with Ms. Claudia Chaustre Professional Development Director and six pedagogical coordinators as well. Both support KLA Schools of West Kendall in specific training requirements.
This year we also offered the staff First Aid and CPR training as required by the Department of Children and Families and followed up on all new requirements such as Safe Sleep and Fire Extinguisher trainings.
Learning our names is a springboard of literacy learning in preschool! Children’s names are the most important words to them, and learning them leads to all other types of learning. Children are interested in their names because they represent who they are. They’re an important part of their identity and children are proud of them.
Pag 17 Manipulating clay helps children develop hand and eye co-ordination as they pound, pat and push the clay into shapes and objects. Clay also helps children develop the small muscles in their fingers and hands, known as fine motor skills, as they pinch, squeeze and prod the clay, adding detail to the shape or object.

The opening and closing motion of cutting with scissors helps children develop the small muscles in their hands otherwise known as fine motor skills. These muscles are crucial for holding a pencil or crayons and gripping and manipulating objects.

Grasping various sizes of beads promote different grasps. Larger beads often promote the grasp, similar to holding a large pencil or marker. Smaller beads encourage children to use their pincer grasp, thus strengthening the small muscles of their hands.
